Widening access and outreach activities

During 2015/16 ILAS started a project, coordinated by M. Mar Encinas-Puente and Omar Silverio Anica, with the Spanish language department of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Southwark, London. The aims of the project are to raise the aspirations of A-level students of Spanish (both those studying Spanish as a foreign language and those for whom Spanish is their mother tongue), to encourage them to consider pursuing Hispanic studies at university level, to prepare them for undergraduate study by helping them establish and develop the necessary academic tools and skills, and to encourage them to consider and embrace unique aspects of the cultural heritage of their countries of origin.

We hope to continue this kind of work in the future and have already established links with schools in areas of low participation in higher education, usually with students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and among whom a significant number are of Hispanic descent and/or from the diaspora of Spanish speaking countries.
